Announcement 1 (8 Feb 2010)
Dear Principal,

The Singapore Dragon Boat Association (SDBA) would like to extend our warm invitation to your school to participate in the 10th National Schools’ Dragon Boat Championship (10th NSDC) to be held on 23rd April 2010 at the Bedok Reservoir.

Background:

The landmark victory by the Singapore Youth Dragon Boat Team in the highly competitive World Juniors Championship last year over traditional powerhouses such as China, Russia and Germany highlighted the potentials of our youths in this sport. Locally, dragon boat racing is also gaining momentum and popularity and this year’s competition will be the 10th edition of the annual National Schools’ Dragon Boat Championship. To celebrate the progress we have made over the past decade, we would like to announce some good news and initiatives to encourage more schools to participate in the sport, as well as to reward the schools that have participated regularly.

Benefits of the sport:

Dragon boat is an excellent sport which strongly promotes the important life values of teamwork, discipline, racial harmony, physical fitness and mental toughness. Our students should be given more opportunity to enjoy the intrinsic benefits of this sport and at the same time be acknowledged and rewarded for good performance such as the School Colours in the future. SDBA would strongly like to urge more secondary schools to support the 2010 10th National Schools’ Dragon Boat Championship.

Likely recognition by the Ministry of Education in 2011:

The Singapore Dragon Boat Association has done its share of hard work in promoting the sport among schools for the past years and we are now in the process of working towards the sport being recognized as a CCA in the Schools’ sporting calendar in the very near future. This would serve as a timely acknowledgement for the schools, their students and teachers who have given their full support to the sport over the years. We hope that this piece of good news would spur the school community to take the sport to greater heights.

New initiatives for 10th National Schools’ Dragon Boat Championship:

1. Novice Category:

In our effort to encourage more schools to participate in the 2010 10th National Schools’ Dragon Boat Championship, we have decided to introduce a new ‘Novice’ category for schools that are new to the sport or have not participated in the National Schools’ Dragon Boat Championship in the last three years. This category would serve as a platform for new-comers to experience dragon boat racing and prepare for future endeavours when they become more proficient.

2. Training Support Scheme:

The SDBA is also offering all participating schools in the 10th National Schools’ Dragon Boat Championship training support in the form of incentives for dragon boat rental and coaching services. Each participating school is entitled to free rental of dragon boat and equipment for four 2-hour sessions. In addition, SDBA will also help to arrange for certified Coaches for these schools new to the sport. The first four sessions of coaching will also be fully paid for by the SDBA. In all, schools will enjoy up to $400-$500 savings.

Conclusion:

With the new initiatives and the intrinsic benefits of the sport, the 10th National Schools’ Dragon Boat Championship promises to be an exciting one for both new-comers and regulars. I sincerely look forward to your support as we endeavour to do our best to continuously improve the competitive experience in this sport for your students.

Thank you.
